Week 3

Rebuilding Family Relationships It's interesting how relationships shift over time. I've been thinking about my relationship with my parents lately, especially through the lens of Knapp's Relational Model. From close childhood bonds to rough patches and finally finding stable (in an agree-to-disagree-but-move-on kind of way) ground as adults, we've basically hit every stage of the model. I'm sharing this from a much better place now than I've been with it in the past, but that's growth, right? The Early Years Things started great - I was that kid who did everything "right." Straight A's, active in our religious community, the works. My parents were my biggest cheerleaders back then. Looking at Knapp's model, we were definitely in the Bonding Stage - lots of trust and understanding all around. Then came college. Dating someone they didn't approve of opened my eyes to some contradictions in their beliefs and actions that I hadn't noti...

Week 2

Week 2 Using Different Social Networking Sites Differently Do different social networking sites offer other benefits and drawbacks?  Different social networks absolutely serve unique purposes in my life, with some surprisingly meaningful impacts. LinkedIn has been far more than just a digital resume - it's actually how I discovered and landed my last two jobs. Facebook acts as my connection hub with long-time friends and family. Just this week, I learned about a cousin's engagement before I ever received a text about it. Instagram is different for me - I tend to follow a wider range of people (or I did when I still used it actively). It became a source of doom scrolling, especially as my feed became cluttered with ads or accounts used for hawking affiliate marketing products. What...

Week 1

Hi, everyone. I'm Stacie, and I’m excited to kick off this blog as part of our Communicating Online course.  About Me I’m currently in my third year of pursuing an Environmental Economics and Policy degree while working full-time (mostly remotely) at an environmental firm in Seattle. I grew up in Texas, spent a few years in Bandon, Oregon, and now live in Tacoma, Washington (so, the Pacific Time zone).  This is my first college-level communication course, but not my first communication course overall. I've taken several professionally, with my favorite being a Visual Communications course where we explored the art and impact of illustrating concepts in professional settings (illustrating a brainstorming session, or storymapping a strategic plan, for example).  A Fun Fact Fun fact: I collect domain names. I registered SpaceTime&Design ages ago, then forgot about it. When it popped up on my screen during this assignment, I realized how well it aligned with my values and...
